Independent Study 1

Log: January 6 - present

Evidence: This is what I ate today.  Embarrassing.  I feel gross now.

Literal
"I, Zarah S., affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work."

Since January 6, I am almost always consistent with my food diary.  I track all the foods I have eaten.  By the end of the day, I get a detailed report about my calorie, carb, fat, and protein intake.

Interpretive
I input my food intake everyday.  Although it doesn't sound like much work, it also took time to understand the website.  Oh, and I accomplished some of the goals listed on the website.  Since my independent study was just to type up the foods I ate, I think that accomplishing a few Sparkpoint challenges should count for something.

Applied
Using Sparkpeople has made me conscientious of what I eat.  The site has a list of little goals and a points system to help people stay motivated to live a healthy lifestyle.  In regards to my EQ, I think starting with small changes to diet (and getting positive feedback and support) will motivate a patient to continue eating healthily.

Pros: I also use SparkPeople and I can appreciate how much time you’ve dedicated to inputting the foods you eat everyday.

Cons: I would have liked a detailed day-by-day breakdown of the foods you ate, not just one day. Spark People offers displaying this information. You mention being a more contentious eater: how so? Did you notice you lacked fiber, ate too much fat during the day, needed more dairy, or ate too many carbohydrates? How did you adjust for this? How, specifically, did tracking your daily food intake change your eating habits? Did you use different parts of the website to aid you in your nutritional goals? I am concerned that you used Spark People simply “just to type up the foods I ate”…you had the power to make this project have more meaning.

  3. Since you provided me with your user name and password, I was able to have a look at how many times you logged in to SparkPeople from January to February.

You did a good job maintaining your diet information at first, but wavered towards the end.

Again, I would have liked to see you apply more meaning to the information you recorded. Some ways you could have done this:
    1. Write an action plan to adjust your eating habits.
    2. Write a reflection on what worked and didn't work.
    3. Use your data to measure the effectiveness of your diet.
    4. Get your friends and family on board, and develop an action plan for them.
